Debunking 5 Myths in Boxing
Boxing is one of the most misunderstood sports out there. For every person who walks through the gym doors fired up and ready to learn, there’s another holding back, being held hostage by half truths and outdated beliefs. Lets break down 5 common misconceptions about boxing and why they are wrong.
Myth 1: You have to Start Young to Box
Truth: Age is no barrier in boxing. Whether you're 5, 17 or 70, it’s never too late to lace up the gloves. Boxing builds fitness, confidence, and discipline at any stage of life. At Darkside, we train clients of all ages, from kids finding their spark to older adults gaining strength, skill, and mental sharpness. You’re never too old to start.
Myth 2: You Need to be Super Fit
Truth: Boxing is how you get fit. Whether you are looking to improve your cardiovascular health, strength, mobility, balance or cognitive improvement, boxing is a fantastic option for each of them. It is a full body workout that will leave you feeling satisfied that you have worked hard for the session.
Myth 3: Boxing is only for Pros or Elite Athletes
Truth: Boxing is for everyone. Whether you’re just starting or aiming to compete, our coaches break down skills so anyone can learn, grow, and enjoy the process.
Myth 4: Boxing is Chaos and Violence
Truth: Technique, footwork, defence, strategy. The list goes on. There is so much more to boxing than just throwing punches. It is a full body, full mind sport. Punches are just a small part of the game. Boxing teaches discipline and respect for those around you.
Myth 5: You will get Punches Every Session
Truth: Sparring isn’t required, and it's always optional and controlled.
One of the most common fears among newcomers is the fear of getting hit. But here's the reality: tons of people train for fitness, skills, and challenge without ever sparring. And even when sparring is part of the journey, it’s progressive, technical, and monitored.
Coach’s Corner
As a coach, I see it every day, good people second guessing themselves because of something they heard, read, or assumed. “I’m too old.” “I need to get fit first.” “I don’t want to get punched.” These myths do more than create doubt, they rob people of the chance to discover what boxing really offers: growth, grit, and genuine empowerment.
If you are concerned about starting boxing but have a gym nearby. I would recommend you just go in, watch a class, speak to the instructors and get an understanding of the gym and the culture. It can be confronting, but once you’re there, you will feel a strong sense of community and respect among members.
